Don’t Forget to Close Your Garage Door!

Closing your garage door may seem obvious, but it is a small task that often gets forgotten. Sometimes extenuating circumstances cause us to rush into the house and forget about closing the garage door. You might say “No big deal, nothing to worry about”…but it is something to worry about!

As a matter of fact, leaving your garage door open all night long, or even during the day while you are at work, may leave you dealing with unfortunate consequences. Let us explain, why it is so important for you to ensure that you close your garage door each time you enter or leave the garage.

Don’t make a burglar’s job any easier!

Despite the fact that you only left the garage door open for only a few minutes, It is important to remember that even that short window was enough time to give would-be thieves a good look at the contents of your garage. Besides your car, you probably have quite a few other valuable items in there such as a lawn tractor, snowmobile, mountain bike, snow blower, or even a very expensive Harley! The value of electric carpentry and wood-working tools is no small matter.

Hopefully, you have homeowner’s insurance to cover their fair value. However, there will be a lot of headaches involved when making a claim and having to explain everything to your insurer. Dealing with the aftermath of a theft is never a pleasant experience. Plus, some things are worth more than just there monetary value. Even if you live in a safe and upscale area, would-be-thieves can still be keeping an eye out for easily swiped things of value.

Don’t make it easy for raccoons or small rodents to take up residence!

Attracting unwanted tenants can be a real issue during the colder winter months. You may not even realize that you have things to attract rodents and small animals. However, a simple bag of birdseed can have chipmunks running from several yards away. Just one whiff of your sunflower seeds and they will be vying to get inside. Once they know where the buffet is, it will be hard to get rid of them. Plus, if they get stuck in the garage, it’s not unheard of for them to gnaw a hole in the bottom of your weatherstripping to get out.

Mother Nature is a fickle woman!

The weather may be quite lovely when you come home in the evening, but things can change quickly from one moment to the next. Leaving your door open overnight may set you up for an unpleasant surprise in the morning. Things like water damage, hail or even snow may end up in your garage.

How can you be sure your garage door is indeed closed?

There are two sure means:

  • LiftMaster’s MyQ Technology
Since 2013, the Chamberlain / LiftMaster company has offered MyQ technology which lets you connect your garage door opener to your smartphone, tablet or laptop via the Internet. The MyQ app sends an SMS message telling you if your garage door is open or closed…wherever you might be in the world.

  • A Garage Door Monitor (829LM)
This is a device that you install in your home, often in your bedroom. It will not only display the state of your garage door, but it will also allow you to close it.

Things to remember…

It is never a good idea to leave your garage door open for extended periods. By not securely closing the door at night or while you are away from the house, you are unconsciously leaving your home open to unwelcomed thieves, rodents, and weather conditions. To combat the issue, add checking the garage door to your evening routine, get in the habit of checking to make sure it is secure just like you do for the rest of your doors.
