What kind of flooring can I use in my garage?

Garage floors take a beating and tend to show signs of wear and tear quickly, so what you want to look for is something durable and easy to clean. Of course, your personal style tastes and budget will also play a role in your decision-making process.

Regardless of the type of floor you go for, you first need to properly prepare the concrete floor, for example, if there are any cracks, you’ll need to fill them in.

Paint

Paint is the cheapest way to give your garage floor a makeover. Latex paint is easy to apply and is the most common type used to cover concrete, but it stains quite easily, which isn’t great in a garage. Latex paint is easy to clean and lasts for about two to three years. You can also find acrylic paints and stains for concrete floors. When you’ve made your choice, speak to a paint specialist about how to prepare the floor before painting.

Epoxy

Slightly more expensive than latex or acrylic paint, epoxy paint is the most popular choice among consumers. It’s easy to apply, easy to clean and very resilient. Epoxy repels water and oil stains, so that’s one less thing to think about. You can even customize the finish by selecting the type of flakes and chips.

Rubber, vinyl or porcelain tiles

Tiles are a more expensive choice, but are the most durable and easiest to clean. There are several different options available:

  1. Snap together tiles: Choose from different colours and design the shape you want using design software. Snap together tiles are made from rubber, so they’re flexible. They’re also very easy to clean. A similar option is rubber matting that can be rolled out to cover the entire surface.
  2. Vinyl tiles: Think of the kind you see in grocery stores. Vinyl tiles are 12 x 12 inches and 1/8 inch thick. The best thing about vinyl tiles is that they don’t stain easily.
  3. Porcelain tiles: Thicker than ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles are the most durable choice for garage floors.
